THE MORTAL’S EYES SHINED TOO bright. That had to be the reason Revyn couldn’t stop looking at her. What did he care about a mortal anyway? They were supposed to be simple and less magnificent than the high fae. So why did this mortal keep wriggling her way into his mind?
He watched her, noticing far too carefully her every move. A grin twitched at her lips as she daintily ate another piece of the chocolate cake on her golden platter. Perhaps it wasn’t the brightness in her eyes. Perhaps it was more the vigor or joy she exuded. Something about her seemed so much more alive than anyone he had ever known.
She kept looking at the cake like she had never seen anything so incredible. And each bite seemed like the most miraculous one she had ever taken. How could he get her out of his head if she kept looking like that?
The answer was simple. He had to get away from her. He had to. His thoughts should have been focused on the pixies’ dying tree. He should have been thinking of a way to get those branches back, so he could fulfill his bargain.
Instead, he kept thinking of how that smile on Clara’s pretty pink lips might twitch upward even more if he led her onto the dance floor and twirled her around in a few dances. She’d probably act like the entire experience was the most wondrous thing anyone could have ever lived through. And if she kept that up, he’d lean in again, and this time, he might actually kiss her.
